«Transport Problems 2020» connects scientists of transport sector

On November 30 - December 2, 2020, the 12th International Scientific Conference “Transport Problems 2020” and the 9th Symposium of Young Researchers were held at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. This year, the two events were linked due to the pandemic situation. As every year, the conference is a platform for the exchange of knowledge of scientists carrying out research related to the widely understood scientific discipline Civil engineering and transport. During the above-mentioned events, papers that perfectly fit into the priority research area: Smart Cities, Mobility of the Future were also successfully presented. Due to the fact that since March this year there has been an epidemic in Poland and in the world related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing the COVID-19 disease, many conferences planned for this year have not been held, and therefore this year's organization of the TP'2020 conference was particularly important. Despite the preparation in the first half of the year, incl. an inquiry regarding the hotel base, the conference was finally held ONLINE via the Zoom messenger and YouTube channel. Initially, there was a concern among the organizers about the possibility of gathering a very small number of participants, which could be the result of using a different form of the conference than the traditional ones, but finally, the conference was successful, and its measurable effect is, among others scientific publication with over a thousand pages. Moreover, the conference gathered participants from 21 countries, including Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Italy, the United States of America, and many others. Its scale is also evidenced by the fact that the participants of this year's deliberations and the speakers at the same time were separated by up to 15 time zones from San Jose (California) and Seattle (UTC-8) to Novosibirsk in Siberia (UTC + 7). This allows us to conclude that this conference is still one of the main platforms of intercontinental exchange and scientific discussion related to the field of transport, so important for the economy.

The plenary session of the conference took place at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering and was opened by the conference coordinator and the Chairman of the Scientific Committee, prof. Aleksander Sładkowski. Then the welcome speech to the conference participants was delivered by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Habil. Eng. Arkadiusz Mężyk and the Mayor of Katowice Dr. Eng. Marcin Krupa, because the Conference is being held under the patronage of the Mayor of Katowice and the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology.

The plenary session was also attended by leading scientists from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Azerbaijan, and Poland, as well as representatives of the Police Road Traffic Department, Provincial Road Transport Inspection, and the Transport Department of the Katowice City Hall. Of particular interest were the papers by the Director of the Institute of Control Systems of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Professor Telman Aliev, Professor Stefano Ricci from the Rome University "La Sapienza", and the scientific director of the Institute of Rail Vehicle Conservation Professor Wolfgang Rösch from Leipzig. Professor Len Gelman from the University of Huddersfield (UK) as a keynote speaker has an approximately one-hour presentation on the topic "Innovative Higher-Order Technologies in Vibration - Fault Diagnostics and Structural Health Monitoring".

At the end of the plenary session, as every year, the participants were invited by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Eng. Grzegorz Wojnar, Prof. of Silesian University of Technology for a trip, which for the above-mentioned reasons took place this year in a virtual version and was possible thanks to the courtesy of the President of Katowice.

In the following days, 8 more sectional meetings were held, the topics of which included all types of transport, new technologies for transporting goods and passengers, aspects of transport infrastructure development, industry management, questions about forwarding and logistics, and many other topics related to transport. As always, special attention was paid to the achievements of young scientists, whose papers were presented in two separate sessions.

To sum up, it can be said that the XII International Scientific Conference and the IX Symposium of Young Scientists, held under the common name of "Transport Problems", ended with unquestionable success. The conference organizers invite all scientists and practitioners interested in exchanging experiences in this discipline next year to the next edition, which will take place in a mixed traditional-remote mode on June 28 - 02/07/2021, but we hope that we will be able to meet directly.
