International activities before and during the viral crisis

2020-03-24

The Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology was actively involved in international activities, which was associated with participation in a number of European and regional programs. For example, PhD student Gina Prodan from the Polytechnic University of Timisoara (Romania) had a monthly internship at our faculty under the FINALIST project (CEEPUS program). Michal Petr Hranicki, a PhD student from the University of Zilina (Slovakia), began his long 5-month internship in the framework of the ERASMUS+ program. Prof. Aleksander Sładkowski visited the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) with a series of lectures within the framework of the AutoAuto project (CEEPUS program).

Of particular note is the interaction of the faculty with a number of Ukrainian and Georgian universities in the SmaLog project, which is being implemented as part of the ERASMUS + KA2 program. For example, prof. Elżbieta Macioszek visited the Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University in February 2020 and in March the A.N. Beketov Kharkiv National University of Urban Economy. During each of the two-week visits to Ukrainian universities, there were held classes with students, consultations and discussions with teachers of these universities.

With a similar visit prof. A. Sładkowski came to Georgia. In addition to lectures and seminars with students and teachers of the Batumi State Maritime Academy, issues of further cooperation between our higher education institutions were discussed. An agreement on academic cooperation was prepared together and signed by the Georgian side.

Unfortunately, at present, due to the epidemiological situation in Poland and in the world, international exchange for students and teachers from different countries is very difficult. It is necessary to reduce or completely suspend this type of activity. For example, two teachers from the Lviv Polytechnic (Mykola Zhuk and Volodymyr Kovalyshyn), who arrived at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering in the frame of the SmaLog project for a month and a half internship, were forced to reduce their stay to two weeks. We hope that after lifting the restrictions related to the epidemiological situation, they will be able to resume the internship.

Currently, 3 students from the National Transport University (Kiev) and 1 student from the Batumi State Maritime Academy are studying at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering. They have passed the mandatory 14-day quarantine and can now, along with other students, take part in classes that are currently carried out by remote methods. Due to certain language difficulties, as well as the novelty of these teaching methods, faculty teachers organize additional assistance for these students so that the learning process will be successful.
