Next Defense at Satpayev University

For 14 years, prof. Aleksander Sładkowski has been collaborating with colleagues from Satpayev University (Kazakhstan, Almaty). He has repeatedly conducted lecture courses and practical classes with students at this university. Employees from Kazakhstan have repeatedly visited Poland, where they had the opportunity to do an internship under the supervision of prof. A. Sładkowski. More than 30 articles and a number of patents have been published as a result of joint research.

One of the forms of such cooperation is joint supervision of doctoral students in Kazakhstan. According to the rules of higher education in this country, each doctoral student is required to have two supervisors. The national supervisor can be a famous scientist from Kazakhstan (PhD or DSc), the foreign supervisor from the leading countries of the world receives the status of a foreign consultant and must necessarily have a DSc degree or the title of professor, as well as significant scientific achievements, expressed in a high Hirsch index. Previously, 7 doctoral students from Satpayev University successfully defended their theses under the supervision of A. Sładkowski.

On December 6, 2024, a meeting of the academic council was held at Satpayev University to defend the dissertation for the degree of PhD Doszhan Baglaev, who prepared a scientific work on the topic "Study of the operation process of valve units of an improved design of sucker rod borehole pumps". This work was prepared by the applicant under the supervision of PhD, professor Seitzhan Zaurbekov and DSc, prof. Aleksander Sładkowski. The dissertation was defended in specialty 8D07110 "Digital engineering of machines and equipment".

In his speech, Doszhan Baglayev described the essence of the problem, which is associated with premature wear of the elements of the ball valves of sucker rod pumps. This is due to the specifics of the oil produced in Kazakhstan. The following figure shows the design of the sucker rod pump and worn valves.

Rod pump design and worn valves

The work proposed a method for numerical modeling of fluid movement in a pump of this type, developed a new design of a valve unit, and created an experimental setup on which laboratory studies were conducted. As a result of this approach, a new design of a valve unit was developed and patented. Experimental samples were manufactured and tested under industrial enterprise conditions. It was shown that the proposed development increases the period between repairs by at least 1.5 times.

The work submitted for defense received positive feedback from reviewers. The members of the council asked the applicant several questions, to which comprehensive answers were given. Prof. A. Sładkowski in his speech noted the fruitful discussion in the previous part of the defense. He emphasized that the dissertation submitted for defense has a very correct structure, which covers theoretical, experimental research, development of a new design and its industrial implementation. During the defense, there were critical comments, for example, that there was no declared development of new materials, but only a proposal to use another material in the design of the valve unit. There was also a discussion about the need to calculate the economic effect of the implementation of the development.

The dissertation defense was held in a hybrid form, which allowed the council members and other participants to participate in it not only from Satpayev University, but also from other cities and countries. In particular, prof. A. Sładkowski participated in the meeting while on a business trip to Tashkent.

Following the discussion, a vote was held, which showed that the council members made a unanimous decision to award Doszhan Baglayev the degree of PhD.
